Australasian Railway Association
What we did
Industry-wide research project commissioned by the Australasian Railway Association and National Transport Commission to identify barriers, supportive practices, and recommendations to improve gender diversity in rail. Consolidated inputs from 600 people across different sectors of the rail industry.
The report on the findings was published and launched in July 2024.
What we recommended
Ten key recommendations for organisations, including developing gender equality strategies, promoting the benefits of working in rail that women identified, providing education on respectful and inclusive behaviour, mentoring and sponsorship opportunities.
Recommendations for the industry included establishment of a diversity and inclusion code of conduct, industry-wide education on inclusive leadership, and programs engaging men.
Outcomes / Impact
The Australasian Railway Association has developed a draft charter supporting diversity, hosted forums on inclusive leadership, supported a pilot ‘Conversations with Men in Rail, and established a Champions of Change Rail Group with senior executive participation.
Program Feedback
“The Australasian Railway Association (ARA) chose Diversity Partners to lead a significant research engagement on gender diversity in the rail sector. After conducting an industry-wide survey and focus groups, they produced a comprehensive report that will guide our future efforts to position rail as an employer of choice for women in partnership with industry. We really valued the partnership, and our team learnt a lot from their knowledge and expertise.”
