Selecting WGEA gender equality targets

If your organisation has 500 or more employees and is starting to prepare for gender equality target setting, we can help navigate the eligible options and guide you on targets that are likely to have a meaningful impact on your gender equality progress.

Has your organisation started to prepare for the new Gender Equality Target requirements coming in 2026? It’s time to explore the options, and Diversity Partners can help.

The selection of targets to meet new federal legislation requirements is not a quick decision.

We’re guiding several organisations with 500 or more employees through the detail of these new requirements to help select relevant and meaningful targets, and to prepare background communications.

This is important to get right. Organisations have three years to achieve, or make progress on, each of their selected targets. If employers do not select, make progress on, or achieve the targets, they will fail to comply and may not be eligible to tender for certain Commonwealth contracts.

A total of three targets must be selected. Action-based targets must represent new commitments. Numeric based targets must stipulate a percentage point increase. At least one numeric target must be selected.

We can help your organisation to:

  • Shortlist the targets your organisation is eligible to select from the menu of 19 WGEA target options through our audit process
  • Provide guidance on which targets are likely to have a meaningful impact on your gender equality progress
  • Engage key stakeholders on target decision-making
  • Communicate the value of target setting to employees.

The targets are to be reported to WGEA in 2026 as part of regular compliance reporting.

Our team of consultants includes Vanessa Paterson, one of Australia’s leading gender equality specialists, who worked with the WGEA for more than 20 years in executive roles.
